Rep. John Conyers endorses Norman Solomon for Congress
U.S. Rep. John Conyers, the 24-term Democrat from Michigan, has endorsed independent Democrat Norman Solomon for Congress in California's 2nd District, which stretches from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Oregon border.
“We especially need Norman's leadership now because my colleague Lynn Woolsey, a great fighter for peace, is retiring,” Conyers said.
Conyers' support for Solomon follows recent endorsements from Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and Dolores Huerta, legendary co-founder of the United Farm Workers union.
Conyers, who has served in the House since 1965 and is the ranking member of the Judiciary Committee and the Congressional Black Caucus, stressed Solomon's leadership on foreign policy, war and health care issues.
“Norman has always been at the forefront of fighting to stop the invasion of Iraq, the occupation of Afghanistan, and now, the threatened attack on Iran,” said Conyers.
The veteran congressman added: “No one has spoken out more forcefully, organized more effectively, and risked his reputation and even his own body on these peace issues than Norman Solomon. We need Norman's leadership on these antiwar issues by my side in the U.S. House.”
Solomon organized and participated in three missions to Baghdad prior to the invasion of Iraq—including one led by Congressman Nick Rahall and former U.S. Senator James Abourezk—seeking alternatives to war.
Conyers also praised Solomon's leadership on healthcare. The two have served together as national co-chairs of the Healthcare Not Warfare campaign, along with Donna Smith of the California Nurses Association.
With Solomon’s help at the 2008 Democratic National Committee platform committee hearings, Conyers recalled, “we were able against great odds to force into the Democratic Party platform serious language changes concerning healthcare for all, including the phrase 'guaranteed healthcare for every man, woman and child in America' and the phrase 'everybody in and no one left out.'"
Solomon, an independent progressive Democrat, is in his third term as an elected delegate from the North Bay to the California Democratic Party’s state central committee.
The Solomon for Congress campaign has raised more than $250,000 in donations from more than 2,200 different individuals, while maintaining its pledge not to take a single dollar of corporate PAC money.
