Former North Coast Congressman Endorses Solomon

Former North Coast Congressman Dan Hamburg has endorsed Norman Solomon for Congress.

Hamburg, now serving on the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors, said that “Norman Solomon is the kind of leader we desperately need in order to re-establish a bond of trust between we the people and our federal government.”

The endorsement, announced on Tuesday (Dec. 13), comes in the race for an open seat in California’s new North Coast district, which includes several of the counties that Hamburg represented in Congress in the early 1990s.

“Alone among the very good candidates in this race,” Hamburg said, Solomon “has a deep understanding of American history and politics. In short, he understands how we got here, and therefore is able to offer a positive vision and a pragmatic plan to move us forward.”

Solomon, an independent progressive Democrat, is running a grassroots campaign that has mobilized hundreds of volunteers. While refusing to take any corporate PAC money, the Solomon campaign has raised more than $250,000 in donations, with mostly small contributions from a total of more than 2,300 different individuals.

Other recent endorsers of Solomon include Congressman John Conyers (D-Mich.), the 24-term ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, and Congressman Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.), co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

“For decades, as an activist and an elected official, Dan Hamburg has shown that leadership can be both principled and effective,” Solomon said. “His support for our campaign is a major boost.”

Text of Dan Hamburg’s endorsement:

“It’s no surprise to me that public approval of Congress is in the single digits. Our democracy cannot long survive such mass disaffection. Norman Solomon is the kind of leader we desperately need in order to re-establish a bond of trust between we the people and our federal government, at least here on the North Coast. This is because, alone among the very good candidates in this race, Norman has a deep understanding of American history and politics. In short, he understands how we got here, and therefore is able to offer a positive vision and a pragmatic plan to move us forward. I urge the voters of the North Coast to send this extremely intelligent and broadly experienced leader to Washington, D.C.”
